Flaming Lips @ MTelus – 20/08/2018

There are some bands for which the 3 songs rule is a shame… Flaming Lips is one of them. Their show is just incredible! They are totally crazy and they know how to show it.

The opening part was handled by Le Butcherettes who did not have as much of craziness on stage as Flaming lips, but their music was balancing that. It was a mix of a lot of things, you like it a lot or you hate it. They did a pretty good job warming up the stage.

I do not want to reveal too much about the Flaming Lips show, so I will just let you with my photos of the show:

Lindsey Stirling @ Place Bell – 30/07/2018

You never heard of Lindsey Stirling ? Imagine a beautiful girl, playing some violin with dubstep in background while dancing and jumping.

This is a quick summary of what this amazing artist do on stage. I rarely seen someone move that much on stage while playing her instrument. The songs are melodic and make you want to move with her.

We had to stay at the sound console and only for three songs sadly, and my 70-200 does not let me a lot of options to have some creative shots, I missed the 100-400 that I rent for Heavy MTL and Osheaga. What I saw was great and the music really nice so I would recommend it to you. My only fear is that for one hour and a half of show, it may be a bit repetitive except if you are a big fan of her.

Fever Ray @ MTelus – 16/05/2018

What I like when working for Thorium is that I am able to cover shows that I would never go to otherwise.

I never heard of Fever Ray before, but I decided to go there after seing some photos of her with a lot of crazy makeup during a live show. If I do not like the music, at least there will be some good photos opportunities.

I was right, Fever Ray and her feminine crew just rock the place. The costumes, the amazing light show, the scenic performance, the music… everything was great. It is absolutely not something that will please everyone, it is kind of crazy type of show. But they definitely convince me.

Theory Of A DeadMan @ MTelus – 08/05/2018

A new challenge was offer to me, get pictures of the headline, not for the first 3 songs, but the first 60 seconds of the first three songs. (Yes, they can be very creative)
This was the rules to cover the show of Theory Of A DeadMan. Why ? I have no idea… but this will gonna be rock’n roll.

At least we had the normal 3 first songs/no flash rule for the opening bands: Falling Through April and Attica Riots.

Unfortunately the lights were not great so most of the image had to be recover using the black and white magic.

Falling Through April left me a good impression but not great, it is a nice band, but I think they are still missing a tiny bit of something to make them really standing out.

On the other side, Attica Riots… SUCH AN ENERGY, I hope to see them again and as a headline if possible. Their show was awesome, I love the way they were using the scene and play with each other. I strongly invite you to see them live.

Finally it was Theory Of A DeadMan and the run against the clock. It was really fun to see every photographer in the pit (and we were a lot) sat down on the media manager signals and wait until the next song. The show was well produce, Good sound, awesome lights, you can see that this is not their first tour.

Tyr @ Theatre Corona – 07/05/2018

Another evening at the Theatre Corona. This time for some folk metal !

It was a long night with four bands:
Ghostship Octavius that I nerver heard of before but was very cool to watch.

Aeternam directly from Montreal ! Awesome band, not the first time I was seeing them and certainly not the last time. If you like folk, you definitely should check them out.

Orphaned Land was a nice discovery. Metal with a bit of an oriental touch, is something not that common. On top of that the musicians were just awesome, moving everything, making faces, a pleasure to photograph them.

Tyr, I know their name sinc e a long time but almost never listen to their music. It was good but not as good as I was expecting. The good part was their show. They really know how to make the crowd going crazy. As a photographer it was really a great time. As a metal fan, a bit less. I may change my mind with a better sound balance.

Ministry @ MTelus – 15/04/2018

I knew Ministry as the “pioneer of industrial metal” and I was not disappointed!

The evening was supposed to have three bands, unfortunately, Chelsea Wolfe had a bus issue and could not make it. It is sad as several people told me they were going to the show to see them.

Anyway, we still had two bands, The God Bombs, and Ministry.
The God Bombs delivered a really nice show, so much energy, and a music not so far from Combichrist (which I loved). It was a really nice discovery. I hope to see them again.

Ministry… Not much to say I found them really nice, I loved their music. If I knew their songs before going, I may have enjoyed more, but it was good enough. If you like Indus, you should definitely check them out and go see them live! You will not regret it.

2Cellos @ Centre Bell – 11/04/2018

It was my first time shooting at Centre Bell. For those who do not know it is the biggest venue in Montreal.

I was a bit stressed by this first time, but everything went pretty well.
The set up of the venue was at his minimal (“theatre mode”) and it was not really different from other venues. If it has been a 360 stage with full seats, I may have been a bit more intimidated.

We were stuck at console so my 70-200 was my best friend, and the only lens I used.

About the show itself… you can read my review (in French). To sum up, it was a really nice show, but it was not as good as Apocalyptica or Hans Zimmer. And when you only do covers of other artists, it is a bit disappointing. So I did not like it because it was bad but because with their talent and resources (and their own compositions), I think they could do a far better show. Yeah, it is a strange feeling.

On the photos side, besides being stuck far from the stage, it was sad that we can only see the first three songs, that were really quiet songs. When you see how they move and do crazy stuff during the hard-rock covers later in the show… It would have been so fun to photograph.

Cradle of Filth @ Theatre Corona – 10/04/2018

It is always a pleasure to see for the first time a band that you were listening to when you were a teenager.

For me, it was the case with Cradle of Filth. I heard a lot about them but never had the chance to see them live.
And it was a delight! What I heard it that their performance and costume were a bit less than what they use to do in the past, but for me, it was far enough and more than I am used to.

And this night was also the opportunity to see two bands as openers. One I have already seen, Uncured, opening for Soulfly and are still really nice to see on stage!
The second band was Jinjer from Ukraine, and I must say it was the nice surprise of the evening. A really great band, with a lot of energy! You must see them!
The only downside is that they would need a better light show, stroboscopic light on every song and almost all song… kind of boring for a full set.
